Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management

Overview

The Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management is designed to support learners in developing their skills and knowledge as future managers within the tourism and hospitality industry.

This qualification introduces key topics relevant to tourism and hospitality, combining theoretical understanding with practical application. Learners will gain insight into areas such as academic and research skills, the business environment of tourism and hospitality, the industry's development, services marketing, consumer behaviour, sustainability, and event management.

Upon successful completion, learners will be well-prepared to progress to university-level study or to pursue career opportunities within the tourism and hospitality sector.

These qualifications are designed for learners who are typically aged 18 and above.

The entry profile for learners is likely to include at least one of the following:

Relevant Level 3 Diploma or equivalent qualification

GCE Advanced level in 2 subjects or equivalent qualification

Mature learners (over 21) with relevant management experience (learners must check with the delivery centre regarding this experience prior to registering for the programme)

English requirements: If a learner is not from a majority English-speaking country, they must provide evidence of English language competency.

The Level 4 Diploma reflects a strong foundation of practical knowledge, skills, and competencies, assessed at an academic level equivalent to a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or the first year of a three-year UK Bachelor's degree. This qualification equips learners with the essential tools needed for further academic study or professional advancement, bridging the gap between secondary education and higher education or entry-level management roles within their chosen industry.

The Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management consists of six mandatory units, delivering a total of 120 credits. The qualification requires a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 1,200 hours, including 600 Guided Learning Hours (GLH).

Mandatory Units:

  • Academic Writing and Research Skills (20 credits)
  • Business Environment for Tourism and Hospitality (20 credits)
  • Services Marketing in Tourism and Hospitality (20 credits)
  • Sustainability in Tourism and Hospitality (20 credits)
  • Events Management (20 credits)
  • The Development of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry (20 credits)

This structured programme is designed to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the tourism and hospitality sector, blending academic knowledge with industry-relevant skills.

The qualification is designed to be completed over a period of six months for full-time study. However, it offers flexibility in delivery to accommodate part-time and distance learning options, making it accessible to a wide range of learners.

It is delivered by approved centres only and may be taught through various methods, including face-to-face lectures, tutorials, seminars, online learning, and distance education, ensuring learners can engage with the course in a format that best suits their needs.

All units within this qualification are assessed internally by the approved centre and externally verified to ensure quality and consistency. The qualification follows a criterion-referenced approach, meaning learners are evaluated based on their achievement of the specific learning outcomes for each unit.

To successfully pass a unit, learners must present evidence that demonstrates they have met all the required learning outcomes and assessment criteria. The responsibility for judging whether these standards have been achieved lies with the Assessor.

Assessors are required to maintain a clear audit trail that documents how they have reached their judgement regarding each learner’s overall performance, ensuring transparency and accountability in the assessment process.

Successful completion of the Level 4 Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management opens up a wide range of academic progression opportunities. Learners can advance to relevant Level 5 Diplomas, building on the knowledge and skills gained at Level 4.

As the qualification is approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), it also allows learners to progress directly into the second year of a three-year UK bachelor’s degree programme, subject to individual university entry requirements.
